Local University Advancing U.S. Army Materials

Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ will lead a $14.5 million Department of Defense/Army Research Lab project to improve army modernization and safety.

The “Advancing Structural Materials for Army Modernization Priorities via Direct-Write Approaches” project will involve a team of experts from Rowan University and PPG, and multiple suppliers including Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.

The focus of the project is to develop innovative materials with “cold-spray,” a coating typically used to attach powdered metals to surfaces. The modernizing discoveries will potentially create stronger and lighter military equipment.

“This important work will improve our national defense and support our soldiers in the field,” said Congressman Donald Norcross, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee. “I’m glad Rowan is receiving this research grant and that this invaluable, innovative work is being done right here in South Jersey.”

Researchers expect the equipment that come from this project will be easy to assemble and repair off and onsite.

Earlier this year, Rowan University added two new majors to their curriculum to meet the business community’s needs for skilled technologists. Rowan continues to lead initiatives that will grow tech talent in our region’s innovation economy.
